FIG_01: JOURNALISM LAB

A new AI tool can arrive faster than a newsroom can find time to test it. For editors and reporters, the practical questions remain: which tools help us work through documents, find a promising lead or understand what readers need? Where do they save time, and where does the work still depend on editorial judgment?

Through Mixer, I've spent years bringing journalists together to examine questions like these. This November, I'm organising a group for Journalism Lab with Google News Initiative. The programme offers time to explore digital tools and connect them to everyday reporting, research and audience understanding. Bring the questions that the conversation around AI has raised for your own newsroom.

We are bringing together newsrooms from Central and Eastern Europe, Ukraine, Belarusian media working in exile, and Armenia. The training will take place online and in English.

// THE PROGRAMME

THREE SESSIONS. ONE PROGRAMME.

SESSION_01

3 NOV

Tuesday, 12:00 CET

SESSION_02

16 NOV

Monday, 12:00 CET

SESSION_03

23 NOV

Monday, 12:00 CET

The meetings take place on 3, 16 and 23 November 2026, each at 12:00 CET / Warsaw time. Registration covers the full cycle, so please nominate someone who can take part across all three dates.

The programme's broad themes connect audience understanding with practical reporting skills. We will look at how audience needs and behaviour can inform editorial work, and how to assess the response to journalism beyond a headline traffic number.

Research is another focus: working with digital tools to explore documents, identify questions worth investigating and understand what people are searching for. Google's Journalism Growth Lab draws on tools including Pinpoint and Google Trends. Digital security also forms part of its wider approach to newsroom practice.

The detailed agenda for our three-session edition will be shared with participants. These are the themes of the programme as a whole, rather than a separate topic assigned to each date.

// WHO

WHO SHOULD TAKE PART?

The invitation is for newsrooms publishing original journalism on their own websites. Editors, reporters and colleagues responsible for digital publishing or newsroom development are welcome. In a small team, that may be the same person.

Our recruitment goal is 20 newsrooms. Bring a colleague who can connect the sessions to your newsroom's work, and bring the questions you want to examine.
