Liepna: discovery of drone debris

What happened

On the morning of 24 October 2026, police confirmed the discovery of debris from a foreign UAV in a hard-to-reach forest in Liepna parish, Alūksne municipality. According to the National Armed Forces (NBS), it may have entered Latvia on 18 October. An explosion-like sound was reported then, and surveillance analysis indicated possible movement of an unidentified object. Searches on 18-19 October ended without sufficient information to confirm the incident. Following the debris discovery, criminal proceedings and an internal review of the military response were opened. NBS reported no civilian casualties or damage to civilian infrastructure. The model, origin, operator and payload remain undetermined. Defence Minister Raivis Melnis conditionally considers a Ukrainian drone damaged over Russia and gliding into Latvia. This hypothesis does not confirm Ukrainian origin, a shoot-down or Russian jamming. The entry date denotes discovery on 24 October; 18 October remains a possible flight or crash date. The map gives discovery on 23 October. Police and NBS quoted by LSM specify 24 October. A possible crash on 18 October is not adopted as an established occurrence date.
