infrastructure disruption: Black Sea, Bulgaria’s EEZ, about 70 nautical miles east of Byala; Able (2026-10-06)

/ date of the event

What happened

At about 03:00 local time on 6 October 2026, the Palau-flagged Able was attacked in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone. The ship was damaged and caught fire. All 18 crew members were rescued; two were hospitalised with burns and a head injury. On the morning of 7 October the vessel was still burning, its engine room was flooded and the Maritime Administration expected it to sink. The source does not confirm that it had sunk. Bulgaria’s prime minister confirmed a series of sea and aerial drone attacks on two ships without naming the operator. AP reports that Ukraine’s president attributed the series to Russia; Bulgarian authorities were still investigating the devices’ origin. The type, model and number of devices striking this vessel are undetermined. This is a separate entry for this ship, without an additional series aggregate. The EEZ is outside Bulgaria’s territorial sea. Exact coordinates have not been established; the entry has no map point. Inspection on 9 October confirmed that Able remained afloat, with severe fire damage and a partially flooded engine room; it carried wheat. The defence minister said the position of the damage suggested a surface drone. No drone remains were found; the model, device count and operator remain undetermined. The 9 October inspection did not resolve the vessel’s subsequent fate. On 12 October, the transport minister confirmed continued monitoring of Able in Bulgaria’s EEZ and a contingency plan should it enter the territorial sea. The vessel remained afloat; no new attack or entry into the territorial sea is confirmed. On 12 October, Bulgaria’s president Iliana Yotova said that the perpetrator and devices’ origin remained undetermined. EMSA was asked for an underwater device to inspect the Alfa Watan wreck; this is a request for assistance, not a completed expert examination. This is Bulgaria’s position, separate from Ukraine’s president attributing the series to Russia on 6 October. BNT reported on 14 October that Able left Bulgaria’s EEZ that night around 01:10, about 33 nautical miles east of Ahtopol. This is the subsequent fate of the vessel attacked on 6 October, not a new attack, sinking or confirmation of full repair. The EEZ exit location is not the location of the earlier attack.

Responsibility and limits of the evidence

officially attributed

A court or a competent state body has attributed it. That is not the same as a proven attack: an indictment is an allegation, not a verdict.

Named party: Russian Federation, according to Ukraine’s president

B - official attribution by a state body

Prezydent Ukrainy Wołodymyr Zełenski / 2026-10-06 / carrying out the act

According to AP, Ukraine’s president attributed the series of attacks on two ships to Russia. Bulgaria’s prime minister did not name the operator; drone origins were under investigation. Grade B describes attribution by a Ukrainian state authority, not a finding by Bulgarian investigators.
