object found: open ground east of Lake Steinhude, near Wunstorf Air Base, Hanover region (2026-09-14)

/ date found, not date of flight

What happened

On 14 September 2026 the Lower Saxony State Criminal Police Office (LKA) learned that parts of a presumably crashed drone had been found on uninhabited ground east of Lake Steinhude, near the Bundeswehr's Wunstorf Air Base; reportedly about 800 m from the site but not on its grounds. From 15 September a large police contingent searched the hard-to-access terrain for further parts and traces of the owner or pilot; the parts were to be examined by a forensic institute. The LKA is handling the case as a hazard-prevention matter and, according to a spokesperson, there are no indications of danger to the public; an assessment is to follow once the search ends. The drone's type, its origin and whether it served to reconnoitre the base or for a private flight have not been established; no source confirms that the drone was armed. According to a 22 September investigation by NDR/WDR/Süddeutsche Zeitung, a suspicious substance was found a few metres from the debris, and investigators were examining whether the drone could have carried explosives. Substance testing was not complete. Similarities to the Leipzig/Halle drone were also being examined. The outlets’ sources said the debris might have lain there much longer, possibly about two years. Armament, a link between the finds and the operator remain unconfirmed; 14 September is the discovery date, not an established flight date.
