airspace incident: near Varėna, flight towards the Kaliningrad region (2026-09-13)
/ date of the event
What happened
On Sunday 13 September at about 4:05 military radars detected an object near Varėna that flew 60-70 km over Lithuanian territory and crossed into the Kaliningrad region. Vilmantas Vitkauskas, head of the National Crisis Management Centre (NKVC), said that judging by the recorded parameters it was most likely an unmanned aircraft, presumably from Belarus; without recovering the object, identification remains difficult. The military found no threat to people or infrastructure. The incident is probably linked to the drone recovered a day later from the Baltic Sea near Jarosławiec, Poland (editorial hypothesis, not officially confirmed).
