airspace incident: south-eastern Estonia on the Russian border; Ludza and Alūksne municipalities in Latvia; a drone heading for Narva did not enter Estonia (2026-09-01)

/ date of the event

What happened

In the early hours of 1 September 2026, according to Estonian Air Force commander Brigadier General Riivo Valge, at about 2am roughly a dozen drones could be seen near Estonia's border while Ukraine was striking targets in western Russia; at about 3am one headed for Narva, ground-based air defence was activated and Turkish fighters were scrambled from Ämari air base, but the drone turned back to Russia without entering Estonia. About half an hour later another drone crossed the border in south-eastern Estonia and circled for a time in the border zone before leaving Estonian airspace; the fighters did not open fire and no drone came down. Public warnings covered eight counties and were lifted before 6am. The same night the Latvian National Armed Forces declared an airspace threat in Ludza municipality (2.00-2.25) and Alūksne municipality (3.37-4.17) and Baltic Air Policing fighters were scrambled; according to Latvian and Estonian media the drone over Alūksne flew on into Estonia, though whether it was the same object has not been officially confirmed. The event spans over a hundred kilometres of border in two countries, so there is no single point on the map; the drones' operator has not been officially established.
