What happened
On 20 August 2026 at about 06:28 a merchant vessel reported a small drifting sea drone in Romania's exclusive economic zone, near the Neptun Alpha platform of the Neptun Deep gas project, about 80 nautical miles east of Constanța. Two F-16s were scrambled; one fired its cannon at the object and hit it without destroying it completely. EOD personnel from a navy ship that reached the site neutralised the drone; after analysing the aircraft data MApN confirmed there had been a single object and that it carried explosives. Defence minister Radu Miruță spoke of protecting the several hundred people working on the platform and said the Ukrainian side had confirmed through a direct channel that the drone was not Ukrainian. Where it came from and who sent it has not been established.
