airspace incident: Near Rugāji, Balvi region (2026-08-14)
/ date of the event
What happened
An unidentified drone entered Latvian airspace in the Balvi region as a result of Russian electronic warfare during a Ukrainian attack on Russian ports. Two Italian Eurofighters from Šiauliai and two Turkish F-16s from Ämari, both on the Baltic Air Policing mission, were scrambled, and the drone was shot down at high altitude by the Italian Eurofighter near Rugāji. Finland restricted airspace over the eastern part of the Gulf of Finland at the time.
The word "Russian" in this description comes from the source's account of where the object was made or what type it is. It is not a finding about who sent it or on whose orders. This record carries no assessment of responsibility: see the attribution band below.
