On Saturday 30 May 2026, during the Whitsun holiday rush, shortly after 9am two flight crews independently reported a suspected drone over Munich Airport to the tower. In coordination with Deutsche Flugsicherung both runways were closed and take-offs and landings suspended; federal and state police searched the grounds, including from a helicopter. The alert was lifted at about 10.05am and the first aircraft landed at 10.24am. According to the airport operator about 20 aircraft were diverted to other airports, among them Frankfurt, Nuremberg and Vienna; t-online reported 26 diversions in total and about 40 aircraft waiting for take-off. A Federal Police spokesperson said nothing was found and no danger was identified. Proceedings against unknown persons for dangerous interference with air traffic were opened; whether a drone was actually there has not been established.
