airspace incident: Hammaste village, Kastre Parish, Tartu County (2026-03-31)

/ date found, not date of flight

What happened

On the night of 30 to 31 March 2026, according to Colonel Uku Arold of the Estonian Defence Forces, several most likely stray drones entered Estonian airspace during Ukrainian drone strikes on Russia's Baltic coast areas; they were detected by radar and fighter jets, public warnings were in force from around midnight until 6am, and NATO fighters took off from Ämari air base. No drone was shot down over Estonia. At about 3am residents of Kastre Parish reported an explosion near Kannu village; patrols found no trace overnight, and at 9.48am a local man found the debris of one drone on a field in the neighbouring village of Hammaste. Police cordoned off the site, Rescue Board bomb disposal experts worked there, and the PPA deputy director confirmed the find at a 10am press conference. The Internal Security Service is establishing the circumstances; the drone type and operator have not been officially given, and the word "Ukrainian" comes from the Defence Forces' assessment, not from an investigative finding.

The word "Russian" in this description comes from the source's account of where the object was made or what type it is. It is not a finding about who sent it or on whose orders. This record carries no assessment of responsibility: see the attribution band below.
