/ date of the event

What happened

The Russian Svetlyak-class border guard vessel SOCHI 500 entered about half a kilometre into Estonian territorial waters east of Vaindloo island and stayed for some 35 minutes. The Estonian Navy tracked the passage and confirmed the violation. The vessel had not given the required 48 hours' notice. On 28 July the foreign ministry summoned the Russian chargé d'affaires and lodged a protest. Per ERR this was the first violation of Estonia's maritime border by a Russian Federation vessel.
