airspace incident: Near Bydgoszcz (remains found in forest at Zamość near Bydgoszcz) (2022-12-16)

/ date of the event

What happened

An unidentified object was detected on Polish radar during a Russian missile attack on Ukraine; neither a US F-15 nor a Polish MiG-29 could visually identify it before radar contact was lost. Missile remains were found in a forest near Bydgoszcz on 27 April 2023 and identified as a Russian Kh-55. The delayed disclosure and radar gaps caused a major political controversy in Poland.

The word "Russian" in this description comes from the source's account of where the object was made or what type it is. It is not a finding about who sent it or on whose orders. This record carries no assessment of responsibility: see the attribution band below.
